Weekend Guide: November 24-27
Spend Thanksgiving weekend in Cambridge with our top six events for the holiday weekend.
The day we’ve all been waiting for (and drooling over) is finally here. Just in case you burn the turkey or your sweet potato casserole doesn’t turn out as you planned, here are a couple of places that will do the cooking for you or are accepting reservations for Turkey Day.
If you’re channeling your inner Julia Child and waiting for your turkey to cook and your guests to arrive, here’s “16 Reasons Why We’re Thankful for Cambridge.” From serious to silly, we’ve got it all.
After all of the turkey is gone and the cranberry sauce is devoured, you’ll be looking for something to do! Head over to the event that only MIT could produce, the Friday After Thanksgiving Chain Reaction event. Participants from all over the country create their own chain reactions and then all of the reactions are linked together to create one, big, giant chain reaction. You won't want to miss this exciting annual event.

We can’t help but brag when we think of all the unique shops located in our city. We've really got it all: from olive oils, fine cigars, specialty candy shops and purveyors of fine honey. These local businesses make up the distinct charm and character of our city, and without them, we simply wouldn’t be the same. Show them some love this Friday and Saturday on Plaid Friday and Small Business Saturday and shop local. After all shopping “small” is a pretty big deal for our local economy.
Shop it: Friday and Saturday
The holiday season doesn’t officially begin here in Cambridge until the annual tree lighting at the Charles Hotel! Bring your family and little ones over to the Harvard Square’s The Charles Hotel to kick off the holiday season.
Help decorate the tree, listen to tunes from Santa’s Jazz Band and then visit with the big guy himself who will probably be enjoying hot chocolate from the Shake Shack and warm cookies from Henrietta’s Table.
This year’s event will benefit Cradles to Crayons Massachusetts. In the true spirit of the holiday season, the hotel is asking for donations of new hats, gloves, and baby coats.
Celebrate it: 4p-6:30p
*Please note: the event is weather permitting. For the latest event updates, follow the Charles Hotel on Twitter @charleshotel
The time has finally come to break out those ice skates and bring out your inner figure skater for this next event. The Kendall Square Ice Rink officially opens for the season this Saturday. Don’t worry if you can’t make it this weekend, the rink will be open until March, which means you'll have plenty of time to master the triple axle.
*Please note: This event is weather permitting.
Skate it: Please check their website for hours
