Weekend Guide: New Year’s Weekend
Spend New Year’s weekend in Cambridge with our top five events:
NEW YEAR'S EVE
Justin Timberlake may be enjoying a quiet night at home with Jessica Biel and their new baby this New Year’s Eve, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dance all night to his music. See the Timberfakes, a Timberlake tribute band at the Middle East on Saturday night. You’ll be dancing along to all the greatest hits of Justin -- even throwbacks from NSYNC, Michael Jackson and more.
See it: 8p, ages 21+
Why drink champagne when you can drink locally brewed beer with Lamplighter Brewing Company this New Year’s Eve?
Attend Lamplighter’s first EVER New Year’s Party in their taproom. Each ticket includes entrance to the party, snacks, three beer pours and one complimentary beer pour at midnight, party favors, and a Lamplighter TEKU beer glass to bring home. Arrive in your coziest pajamas or dressed to the nines for what is sure to be a great night.
Celebrate it: Fun begins at 9p and ends at 2p
Of all the movie theaters, in all the towns, and in the world, be sure to walk into the Brattle Theatre this weekend to see the classic movie Casablanca for the last time this year.
The theater usually plays this classic movie on Valentine’s Day every year, but because Warner Bros. will be taking the movie out of circulation for their 75th Anniversary, this is the last time you’ll be able to see the movie in the theater until 2018. Casablanca is certainly a perfect pick as the last movie you see in 2017!
In case one viewing isn’t enough, the Brattle Theatre is offering three show times on Friday evening and four showtimes on Saturday evening.
See it: 4:30p, 7:00p and 9:30p on Friday and 1:30p, 4p, 6:30p and 9p on Saturday
New Year’s Eve should be celebrated with lots of glitter, dancing, and 70s anthems. That’s exactly what you’ll find at the Oberon’s Donkey Show. The festive show tells the story of Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream, but with a disco twist. You’ll find yourself immersed in an enchanted forest filled with glittering characters rolling around the theater on roller skates all before the traditional toast at midnight!
See it: 9p-2a
The ImprovBoston isn’t just hosting one show this New Year’s Eve, they’re hosting three! Everyone from families with little ones to adults hoping to laugh their way into 2016 will find a show that is guaranteed to make them giggle.
The fun starts with two family friendly shows that is appropriate for all ages, followed by two shows for teens ages sixteen and older. Last but not least, ImprovBoston will be putting on a twenty-one and older performance to ring New Year -- with a champagne toast included!
Celebrate it: Family friendly shows at 6p and 7p, 16+ at 8p and 9p, and 21+ at 10p
Last meal in 2016
If there’s one thing that Cambridge takes pretty seriously, it’s dining. Before the clock strikes midnight and champagne toasts ensue, we suggest enjoying one last delicious meal of 2016 in Cambridge.
Here are a couple of suggestions to get you started:
Everything should be sparkling on New Year’s Eve and that includes your view. You’ll have an amazing view of the Boston skyline while savoring a delectable dinner, followed by a decadent chocolate tasting.
Sip on adult-approved cocktails, while your little ones sip on Shirley Temples at Commonwealth’s kid-friendly New Year’s Eve party. Enjoy movies, crafts, apps and big-kid food all before the BIG event -- a ball drop and toast at 7:30p, which Commonwealth so lovingly refers to as Toddler’s Midnight.
Pig out before the clock strikes midnight at the Inman Square restaurant. Feast on a six-course prix-fixe dinner, all while managing to save a little room for their free (yes, seriously. FREE!) pig roast -- complete with passed apps and champagne to ring in the new year. Sounds like the perfect way to end 2016!
Brunch your way into 2017
After you’ve dined at some of the best restaurants in Cambridge for your last meal of 2016, the stakes are pretty high for your first meal of 2017. Since brunch really is the most important meal of the week, here are a couple of suggestions for where to grab your first plate of eggs, pancakes, and bacon in 2017:
Is there anything better than a bagel sandwich the morning after a late night? We didn’t think so either. Head over to Bagelsaurus in Porter Square to order bagels for your entire family and start off the New Year the right way. One bite of the T-Rex bagel sandwich (homemade almond butter + banana + honey + bacon) and you’ll be thanking your lucky stars for 2017.
Start 2017 off with brunch at one of Harvard Square’s newest mouth-watering restaurants, Waypoint. Chef Michael Scelfo, whom you may know best for his first restaurant, Alden & Harlow (another great place to grab brunch) will not disappoint. Choose from their new brunch menu or special items like a lobster and beef neck hash with slow-scrambled eggs and an english muffin.
Just in case you feel lucky (and very hungry) we suggest heading over to Craigie on Main’s annual Lucky Brunch. Feast on a three-course prix-fixe menu that is sure to kick off your dining experience in 2017. In case that isn’t enough, Craigie on Main will pick one lucky table to have their entire meal on the house. So go ahead and invite that one friend who always wins a raffles and scratch tickets.
