Weekend Guide: January 26-29
Spend the weekend in Cambridge with our top five must-see events.
Every year, the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, a theatrical society at Harvard University, honors one man and one woman who have made outstanding and significant contributions to the entertainment world. We couldn’t have been more excited when we heard the news that Octavia Spencer was chosen as this year’s Woman of the Year.
Octavia Spencer, who you might know as the star of the Oscar-nominated Hidden Figures, will be in Harvard Square this Thursday afternoon for the traditional parade and roast. You’ll definitely want to plan your lunch break for a little later than usual on Thursday to guarantee you see the starlet. At 2:45p on Thursday afternoon, Spencer, along with members of the club dressed in drag will be paraded through Harvard Square from Mass Ave to Holyoke Street.
Following the parade, Spencer will be whisked away to a private celebration where she’ll receive the coveted golden Pudding Pot at Farkas Hall. We guess the saying, ”The proof is in the pudding,” truly applies here.
If you can’t make it into Harvard Square for the parade, catch the press conference live for the first time ever on the Hasty Pudding’s Facebook at 4:30p.

See it: The parade rolls at 3p, but we suggest getting to the parade route at 2:45p to ensure the ultimate viewing spot
After you’ve seen Octavia Spencer paraded through Harvard Square, be sure to make your next stop of the day in Kendall Square. Mamaleh’s Delicatessen (if you haven’t been yet, go!) will be hosting a free comedy show downstairs in their Simcha room. Headliner Matt Kona and other hilarious comedians will have you giggling all night long, which makes this the perfect event to kick off your weekend.
We recommend registering for the free show A.S.A.P., as spots are limited.
See it: Doors open at 7p, show starts at 7:30p
One of our favorite places in Cambridge to visit is the Charles Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Science. This Friday evening, grab a friend and head over the planetarium to see the wonders of the night sky up close. A live presenter will take you on a journey through the celestial sights and planets, all without ever having to leave Cambridge.
See it: 5:30p
Attend the Second Annual Catalysts performance at The Dance Complex this weekend and prepare to be inspired. The performance celebrates five artists-in-residence who will perform original works which reflect their expansive and unique talent. Each piece of work will exhibit dynamic themes approaching their subject matter as a starting point for inspirational dance performances.
See it: Friday, January 27 at 8p and Saturday, January 28 at 8p
The sweetest festival of the year is back for its ninth year and we (and our sweet tooth) can hardly wait. This weekend, restaurants and cafes in Harvard Square will whip up special menus and dishes devoted to everything and anything chocolate, while retailers offer delicious deals that are sure to be tempting.
The true highlight of the festival is the Chocolate Tasting Event on Saturday, January 28th at 1p. For one scrumptious hour in Brattle Plaza, festival-goers will be treated to complimentary chocolate snacks from Harvard Square restaurants.
Taste it: All weekend long

Celebrities are flocking to Cambridge for pudding pots…The Gold pudding pot that is.
If you haven’t already heard, Ryan Reynolds has been named this year’s “Man of the Year” by Hasty Pudding Theatricals, which means he’ll be awarded the golden Pudding Pot. The talented actor and heartthrob will be honored next Friday evening with the traditional roast before he can accept this award.
For the first time EVER, the press conference for Ryan Reynolds will be streamed live for the public on The Hasty Pudding Theatrical’s Facebook.
See it: 3:45p
BBQ and football go together like Tom Brady and Super Bowl Rings, which makes Kendall Square’s The Smoke Shop the perfect place to watch the big game. As if the New England Patriots going to the Super Bowl was enough excitement for the day, the Smoke Shop is amping up the day with a whole hog extravaganza.
They’ll have a special viewing section, complete with 10 LED televisions, dinner and dessert buffet. If you’re looking for a more intimate viewing experience, upgrade to the “Owner’s Box” which will treat a group of 12-14 of your closest friends to your own private alcove, all the fixings of the dinner and dessert buffet, pitchers of beer, and a suckling pig presented by the chef himself!
Enjoy it: 5p
