Zimbabwean Music Workshop
Participate in a free Zimbabwean music workshop with visiting musicians Moyo Mutamba, Jennifer Kyker and Memory Makuri on Saturday, April 29! Teaching will be appropriate for all skill levels. Don’t miss the chance to meet and learn from three amazing instructors and musicians. Dr. Moyo Mutamba is a professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada and is an expert on indigeneity and decolonization, as well as being well-versed in Shona music and culture. Dr. Jennifer Kyker is an ethnomusicologist at the University of Rochester and is one of the most experienced US mbira players, having performed and taught mbira for over 15 years. Memory Makuri is a world-renowned artist and one of few women who have forged careers in the Zimbabwean music industry. She has performed with numerous Zimbabwean groups, including the legendary band, Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited. This program is funded by Council for the Arts at MIT, MIT Music & Theater Arts as well as MIT Institute Community and Equity Office.
