George Coleman at Regattabar

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master and Memphis Music Hall of Fame inductee George Coleman, a formative figure in jazz history, performs Friday, Mar. 1 and Saturday, Mar. 2 at Regattabar. As part of the Miles Davis Quintet, he is featured on many landmark recordings, including "Seven Steps to Heaven" (1963), "My Funny Valentine" (1965) and Herbie Hancock’s "Maiden Voyage" (1965).

Growing up in Memphis in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s alongside Booker Little, Harold Mabern, Frank Strozier, Jamil Nasser, Hank Crawford, Phineas Newborn Jr. and B.B. King, Coleman eventually moved to Chicago and then NYC. Throughout his decades-long career he has toured and recorded with an exhaustive list of jazz legends, including Max Roach, Ahmad Jamal, Elvin Jones, Red Garland and Charles Mingus.
