"Angola Do You Hear Us? Voices from a Plantation Prison"

On Thursday, Nov. 17, Harvard Art Museums presents MTV Documentary Films’ "Angola Do You Hear Us? Voices from a Plantation Prison" (formerly known as "A Peculiar Silence"). The film tells the story of playwright Liza Jessie Peterson, whose acclaimed play "The Peculiar Patriot" was shut down mid-performance at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola Prison. Directed and edited by Cinque Northern, produced by filmmaker Catherine Gund, and featuring Liza Peterson plus Norris Henderson, the film examines how one woman’s play challenged the country’s largest plantation prison and left a profound impact on the incarcerated men long after the record of her visit was erased by the institution’s administration. A conversation with Liza, Catherine and Harvard professor Brandon Terry will follow the film. Brandon is also the co-director of the Institute on Policing, Incarceration and Public Safety at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research.

Admission is free, but seating is limited. Reservations are encouraged and may be arranged by clicking on the event on this form beginning Monday, Nov. 7, after 10 a.m. The screening will take place in Menschel Hall. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Please see the museum visit page to learn about the general policies for visiting the museums. The Harvard Art Museums are committed to accessibility for all visitors. For anyone requiring accessibility accommodations, please contact am_register@harvard.edu at least 48 hours in advance.
